Quill

Quill is a VR-based 3D painting tool, originally developed at Oculus Story Studio as a tool to create the groundbreaking VR piece Dear Angelica, and later released as a stand-alone application.

Its development has continued and is currently available from Smoothstep, and prominently used by Goro Fujita.

I collaborated on the specification and design of the audio functionality in the Quill app, enabling sound and music to be authored directly into the artwork with flexible spatialization, timeline functionality, and mixing control.

This allowed us to support immersive shows like Talking with Ghosts, for which our team created and implemented the sound and music. This suite of short experiences debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2017, where The Verge awarded it both "Best Interactive Design" and "Best Innovation" in the show.

Reservoir was probably the most elaborate Quill show to date.

As the software matured and its capabilities grew, we had the opportunity to support very complex and involved pieces in a wide range of genres and styles.
